Conceived as a space where memory is made tangible through form, the Martyrdom of Polish Villages draws inspiration from the humble wooden cottages of Poland. Fragmented in nature, the space pays homage to the violence inflicted on the Polish villages during the 1943 pacifications.
Upon arrival, visitors enter a complete volume, a moment of reflection and learning. As they venture deeper into the space, the form begins to deconstruct, revealing voids to the exterior realm. The fractured space symbolises the trauma and destruction of the pacifications. With each fracture, light pours into the space, revealing the stories of people who once lived in the villages.
The space stands as a testament to resilience, power, and memory. One that memorialises destruction and loss.
