Rooted along a historical pilgrimage route on the Romea Road, the Chapel in the Woods offers a symbolic pause between forest, river, mountain, and man. The 9x6 metre chapel consists of only a brick wall supporting a tall iron cross, paired with a basic seat. Although simplistic in material form, Zermani’s chapel communicates a strong message: The power and stability of religion.
Constructed with local bricks and iron, the material palette echoes the context’s culture and character. Throughout the day, the shadow of the cross casts across the landscape and wall. Passage of time becomes a conceptual driver, one guided by permanence and transience.
